New Airport Thunderstorm and Lightning Alerting System

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has developed a new Airport Thunderstorm and Lightning Alerting System (ATLAS) which issues Red and Amber lightning alerts based on weather radar echoes and lightning strokes detected by the Lightning Location Information System (LLIS) of HKO and the lightning detection system of the China Light and Power (CLP).

The ATLAS alert status, lightning detected and weather radar echoes around HKIA are shown on the ATLAS page of AMIDS. In addition the ATLAS alert signals are also sent to AAHK's Airport Lightning Warning System (ALWS) for dissemination via the apron warning lights and siren and other AAHK distribution systems.
