Joint CAD-HKO Workshop on the Use of Weather Information in Support of Air Traffic Flow Management

Nearly 30 colleagues from the Air Traffic Management Division (ATMD) of the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) and the Hong Kong observatory (HKO) attended a joint workshop on 2 June 2010 at the Air Traffic Control Complex in the Hong Kong International Airport. The objectives of the workshop were to enhance aviation forecasters understanding of the use of weather forecast in air traffic flow management (ATFM) and to explain the use of the new significant convection forecast product and forecast challenges to CAD colleagues. Professionals from CAD briefed HKO staff on the concept of ATFM and how it is related to the weather. HKO colleagues shared with our partners the design and use of the new significant convection forecast product and its preliminary verification results. The workshop provided an excellent platform for informal interactions and open discussions on the key issues. This was the second joint workshop of a similar nature. More joint workshops will be held in the future to further enhance coordination between HKO and CAD.
