| Under the influence of northeast monsoon, prevailing winds at the Hong Kong International Airport were generally from the northeast in the morning of 2 December 1999. Due to daytime heating by the sun, the temperature over the land surface became higher than that of the surrounding sea surface. As a result, sea breeze set in around noon time with the wind direction turning to northwest over the airport. At around 4 pm when this heating effect subsided, the sea breeze retreated and northeasterly winds prevailed again over the airport. |
