| Simply speaking, "runway visual range (RVR)" refers to the distance over which the pilot can identify the runway from its surface markings or lights. Runway visual range transmissometers determine RVR from the intensity change of light beams after traversing fixed distances in air, the runway light intensity, and brightness of the background.
