Dr Cheng Cho-ming, Director of the Observatory, appeared on RTHK’s programme “Climate Watcher” (programme is broadcast in Cantonese) to review the weather of Hong Kong in 2020 and help members of the audience understand the major weather events that occurred in 2020, including tropical cyclones and rainstorms that affected Hong Kong.

Hong Kong experienced a “scorching” year in 2020. Throughout the year, there were 47 very hot days (when the daily high temperature reaches or exceeds 33 °C) and 50 hot nights (when the daily low temperature reaches or exceeds 28 °C), both of which were the highest on record since 1884. Hong Kong also experienced the hottest summer on record, from June to August 2020, with the mean temperature, highest mean temperature and lowest mean temperature reaching 29.6 °C , 32.6 °C and 27.7 °C, respectively – all of which were likewise the highest on record. July was even the hottest month on record, with the Very Hot Weather Warning in force for a record-breaking period of over 19 consecutive days.
