SWIC Website Won The Typhoon Committee Award

The Observatory won the Typhoon Committees Dr. Roman L. Kintanar Award for 2009, and Dr. B.Y. Lee, Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, received the award during the Opening Ceremony of the Typhoon Committee 42nd Session held in Singapore on 25 January 2010.The Typhoon Committee, comprising 14 Members from the Asia Pacific region, presented the annual award to institutes and organizations in recognition of their dedicated effort in mitigating the impact and risks of disasters caused by tropical cyclones. The Observatory was cited for her outstanding contribution in developing and operating the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Severe Weather Information Centre (SWIC) website ( http://severe.worldweather.wmo.int/ ) to integrate and enhance regional activities of Members within an international framework for the reduction of loss of lives and damage through the provision of tropical cyclone information and severe weather warnings for the benefit of the global community.
In addition to the routine agenda for the review and planning of Typhoon Committee activities during the week-long meeting, two Observatory papers were also presented at the scientific lectures session. Mrs. Hilda Lam, Assistant Director, shared with the participants the Observatorys experience in Warning dissemination using an existing platform and community automatic weather station. Mr. Edwin S.T. Lai, Senior Scientific Officer, presented the research results of a study on Application of satellite rain rate estimates to the prediction of tropical cyclone rainfall on behalf of Mr. S.T. Chan and Ms. Eliza M.Y. Chan, the authors of the paper.
