31 December 2012
A group of 6 delegates from Northeast Regional ATMB and Dalian ATMS, CAAC led by Ms. LIU Yunxia, Deputy Director of Meteorological Service Department of Northeast Regional ATMB, visited the Observatory between 17 and 21 December 2012. During the visit, discussions were held on various topics including aerodrome weather observation, windshear and turbulence alerting service, and severe convection forecast for aviation. The delegates showed great interest in the Observatory's experience in establishing meteorological observation systems at the Hong Kong International Airport as well as application of Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) in the detection of windshear. The delegates also visited the Airport Meteorological Office, LIDAR, and the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar at Tai Lam Chung.Furthermore, the delegates reported on the latest developments at the Dalian ATMS and had technical exchange with Observatory staff on siting of meteorological instruments and collection of observational data in relation to the new international airport at Jinzhou Bay, Dalian. Through the visit, Observatory staff gained better understanding of aviation meteorological services in the mainland while both organisations benefitted from experience sharing on aviation meteorological technologies.
