Hong Kong Observatory actively participates in the implementation of the "South China Sea Region Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System"

Along with representatives from the State Oceanic Administration and China Earthquake Administration, Mr Mok Hing-yim, Senior Scientific Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory, was part of the Chinese delegation attending the 25th Session of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Pacific Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/PTWS-XXV) under the Intergovernmental Oceanic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The meeting was held from 9 to 11 September 2013 at Vladivostock, Russian Federation. Mr Mok was elected the Chair of the Regional Working Group on "Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System in the South China Sea" at the meeting.

The Working Group comprises nine member countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) along the coast of the South China Sea region. It is tasked to implement the "South China Sea Region Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System", endorsed by ICG/PTWS-XXV as a technical platform in support of tsunami hazard monitoring, warning message dissemination, risk assessment and emergency preparedness for the region.
