State Oceanic Administration and Hong Kong Observatory celebrating the 10th anniversary of co-operation in oceanography

A 6-member delegation from the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) visited the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) on 17 February 2017 to attend the 4 ^th bilateral meeting for reviewing progress and planning further collaboration. The opportunity was also taken to celebrate the 10 ^th anniversary of co-operation in oceanography between SOA and HKO since the signing of the collaboration agreement in early 2007.

Officiating at the opening ceremony, Ms Chan Yue, Deputy Director-General of the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of SOA, and Mr. Shun Chi-ming, Director of HKO, both highlighted in their speeches the notable achievement made over the past ten years on various aspects, such as storm surge warnings for the Pearl River Delta region, tsunami warning and mitigation systems, marine meteorological observation over the South China Sea, as well as data communication and information sharing.

Following the discussion at the meeting, it is expected that ties between the two organizations will be further strengthened through continuing collaborative effort in enhancing the service level of forecast and warning for maritime hazards, development of observation and monitoring systems over the South China Sea, mutual technical support of voluntary observing ships, and study of long-term sea level rise associated with climate change.
