Historical Records of Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals in Hong Kong during 1917-1941
This webpage shows the historical records of tropical cyclone warning signals of Hong Kong between 1917 and 1941. In 1917, numbered tropical cyclone warning signals were introduced in Hong Kong to warn the public of the wind strength and direction in Hong Kong during the approach of tropical cyclones. The numbered tropical cyclone warning signal system has been revised several times afterwards. Therefore, tropical cyclone warning of a particular number may have different meanings at different time periods. For example, the number 7 signal between 1917 and 1930 was the hurricane signal, while the number 7 signal after 1931 was the Northeast gale signal. Please refer to the webpage for detailed information on the evolution of the numbered tropical cyclone warning signal system in Hong Kong. For details about the recovery of the records, please refer to the Observatory’s Blog: “Recovery of pre-World War II Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Records in Hong Kong”.

- Tropical cyclones in the western North Pacific basin were not named before 1950s. In this webpage, a tropical cyclone ID (TCID) was assigned to each storm based on the year of occurrence and chronological order of the warning time. For example, 1917 #01 refers to the first tropical cyclone affecting Hong Kong in 1917.
- The end time of number 4 signal on 26 June 1925 and the start time of number 1 signal on 7 July 1925 was only estimated time because of incomplete record.
- S at Hoisting Time or Lowering Time column indicates Summer Time HKT + 1 hour.
