Local windsurfers can now obtain the latest weather information for 10 windsurfing hotspots from the Wind Forecast for Wind Surfers website (http://www.hko.gov.hk/sports/windsurf.htm).
Launched by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) today (January 29), the website provides detailed weather forecasts for various hotspots, including, in particular, wind direction and speed and real-time weather observations from nearby weather stations.
Senior Scientific Officer of the HKO, Miss Lau Sum-yee, said, "The new service has emerged with the benefit of the experience gained from the Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games.Site and time-specific forecasts for various hotspots are generated from the same high-resolution computer model that we developed and deployed during the Games."
Vice-President of the Windsurfing Association of Hong Kong, Mr James Chik, commended the Observatory's efforts, saying the detailed wind and weather information made available on the website had long been desired by local water sports enthusiasts."With the new service, the windsurfers stand a better chance of finding good wind."
Founder of the Wind Chasers group of local windsurfing enthusiasts, Mr Caxton Li, said, "I am pleased to see that through interaction with users, the Observatory has developed a technical solution that meets users' needs and provides wind and weather information for what were blind spots."
The Observatory has always supported the promotion of safe water sports in Hong Kong.It also offered comprehensive meteorological support to the Hong Kong windsurfing team in major events such as the past two Olympics held in Athens and Beijing, as well as the Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games.
