The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) today (10 October) announced the launch of MyWeather a mobile application on the iPhone platform featuring the World Weather Information Service (WWIS) under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It is the world's first ever location-specific weather service providing official city weather forecasts around the world for people on the move.
MyWeather has been developed by the HKO on behalf of the WMO. Equipped with location-based technology to detect the user's location, the application automatically displays the latest official weather forecasts and climatological information of the city nearest to the user. It provides a quick search function that allows users to obtain the latest official weather information from over 1,400 cities around the world. The application also enables users to create bookmarks for easy access to weather forecasts for cities of their choice in the future.
The Secretary-General of the WMO, Mr Michel Jarraud congratulated the HKO on the launch, saying, "MyWeather provides a convenient channel for the global community to obtain reliable weather forecasts for cities around the world. It is an excellent example of collaboration between international meteorological communities to better serve the public worldwide."
The Director of the HKO, Mr Shun Chi-ming said, "With the ever-increasing number of smartphone users, MyWeather provides a new means for the international community to obtain ready-to-use official weather information while on the move. We are very proud to have played a central role in developing this application."

The website of WWIS (http://worldweather.wmo.int) is the first and only website presenting official weather observations, weather forecasts and climatological information for cities worldwide. WWIS aims to provide a one-stop shop for authoritative and reliable weather information around the world to all Internet users and media. The WWIS website was developed by the HKO, which also maintains the website, on behalf of the WMO. At present, 131 WMO Members supply official weather forecasts for 1,453 cities to WWIS. By September 2011, the cumulative total number of page visits to WWIS website reached 950 million.
