"Climate Change - Our Response" exhibition for 10th anniversary of Science in the Public Service campaign launched today

The "Climate Change - Our Response" exhibition for the Science in the Public Service (SIPS) campaign was launched today (June 2). The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam; the Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim; the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing; the Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Godfrey Leung; and the Director of Hong Kong Observatory, Mr Shun Chi-ming, officiated at the launching ceremony. Representatives from various government departments and collaborating organisations were also invited to participate in the ceremony.
Through the integrated effort of various government departments and collaborating organisations, SIPS has been promoting the application of science and technology in the provision of public services since 2006. While SIPS celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, it will for the first time organise a roving exhibition with the theme of climate change to show how we could work together to build a low-carbon and sustainable society in three main aspects namely mitigation, adaptation and resilience. The scope of the exhibition covers energy and living, transportation and logistics, food and water resources, safety and health, as well as environment and sustainable development.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Mrs Lam said, "Climate change not only brings about challenges to weather forecasting and environmental protection, but also directly impacts society's development as well as people's livelihood. The establishment of the Steering Committee on Climate Change highlights the Special Administrative Region Government's great attention and determination for the work on combating climate change. Through development of long-term strategies, we hope to meet the carbon emission reduction target and enable our city to face and adapt to the impacts of climate change. As Chief Secretary for Administration and the Chairperson of the Steering Committee, I will actively co-ordinate the efforts of various government departments and mobilise them in enhancing their mitigation, adaptation and resilience actions."
Mr Shun said at the ceremony that the "Climate Change - Our Response" exhibition is the first ever roving exhibition organised by the SIPS. Apart from the support rendered by various government departments and collaborating organisations, community partners including senior citizens and young people are also involved in this event. He hoped the climate change messages could be delivered to the public more effectively through engagement of the entire community. He encouraged members of the public to respond to the exhibition theme of "ARM (Adaptation, Resilience, Mitigation) and Act" by joining hands in creating a low-carbon and sustainable society.
The first stop of the roving exhibition will be at the Exhibition Gallery of the Hong Kong Central Library, Causeway Bay, which will last for five days (June 3 to 7). It will then proceed to nine other locations in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories for display till November this year.
In addition to the exhibition, the SIPS campaign will launch a series of 25 popular science lectures at the Hong Kong Science Museum from June to December this year. The lectures will be conducted by professionals from government departments, collaborating organisations and tertiary institutes. Fifteen of the lectures are related to climate change such as relevant initiatives and facilities, green living and environment, while the others cover a wide range of subjects including medicinal chemistry, telecommunication, statistics and education.
