Hong Kong Observatory Calendar 2017 on sale
7 December 2016
The exquisite Hong Kong Observatory Calendar 2017 will go on sale tomorrow (8 December).
The photos in the calendar echo the 2017 World Meteorological Day theme - "Understanding Clouds" and promote an appreciation and understanding of the fascinating and ever changing clouds in all their forms and shapes. This year, apart from collecting weather photos through the social media, the Observatory has also adopted winning entries from the first-ever "Sky of Silver Age" photo competition jointly organised by the Observatory and the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association. Each calendar photo provides a quick response (QR) code for readers to access relevant information on the respective weather phenomena.
2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the introduction of numbered typhoon signals in Hong Kong. To commemorate the event, specially designed centre spreads have been added to outline the evolution of tropical cyclone warning system in Hong Kong over the past century.
The calendar also contains useful climatological and astronomical information, including monthly climatological data and special climatological events, the times for the rising and setting of the sun and the moon, dates of eclipses of the sun and the moon, and tidal information.
At $40 a copy, the calendar is an ideal Christmas and New Year gift for friends and relatives. It is on sale at the Observatory's Resource Centre, the Publications Sales Unit of the Information Services Department and the Kowloon Map Publications Centre of the Lands Department. The calendar is also available through the online Government Bookstore at www.bookstore.gov.hk.
