Highest water level during notable tropical cyclones since record began in 1954
As the tide station and related facilities at Waglan Island were devastated during the strike of Super Typhoon Ragasa on 24 September 2025, real-time tide data of this station is currently unavailable.
Chart description:
  1. Coastal sea level forecast shows the total still water level forecast for tide station locations in Hong Kong up to 12 hours ahead, taking into account the water level anomalies due to storm surges associated with tropical cyclones and other meteorological effects such as monsoons, in addition to astronomical tide prediction.
  2. Please note that wave effects such as wave runup or overtopping waves are not taken into account in the water level forecast. Short-period fluctuations of water level due to high winds and pressure change during the passage of squall lines or water anomalies due to tsunamis are also not included here.
  3. Water level forecast is marked in dark green while the uncertainty spread of forecast indicated by the likely range is shaded in light green. The actual water level is expected to fall within the predicted likely range with a probability of about 70%. Forecast locations like Tsim Bei Tsui and Tai Po Kau are located at semi-enclosed bays which makes wave interactions particularly complicated and may lead to larger errors in storm surge prediction. The probability of the predicted likely range covering the actual may thus be lower in these cases.
  4. Please note that only minimal quality check is applied automatically to water level observations marked in blue.
