Satellite Imagery of Interest: Rope Clouds

A new Satellite Imagery of Interest is now available on the Observatory's website. The imagery shows rope clouds associated with a cold front.

On 14 February 2016, satellite imagery shows a thin line of clouds known as “rope clouds” extending over a thousand kilometres from southern China to northwestern Pacific. Rope clouds form when warm and moist air is uplifted by outspreading denser cold air. Rope clouds show where cold air meets with warm air, and mark the location of a cold front. (The satellite imagery was captured by Himawari-8 satellite of Japan Meteorological Agency)
