    Another Award for the SWIRLS

The SWIRLS (Short-range Warning of Intense Rainstorms in Localized Systems) nowcasting system, developed in-house by the Observatory, won two Winner Awards again in entries titled "Public Sector and Government category - Government & Citizen Services" and "Technology category - Artificial Intelligence” in the Asia Pacific Information and Communications Technology Alliance (APICTA) Awards, held in November 2019 in Ha Long, Vietnam. This followed SWIRLS winning the Grand Award and the Gold Award of the Hong Kong ICT Awards in April 2019. SWIRLS combines information technology and big data, with the application of artificial intelligence and a deep learning prediction model, to support the Observatory's operation of rainstorm forecasting and warning services, to ensure public safety and reduce losses.
