Hong Kong Observatory Open Day 2024

Editorial Board

Hong Kong Observatory Open Day 2024 was held on 23 and 24 March, receiving an overwhelming public response, with about 10,000 visitors attending.

The Open Day adopted the theme of the World Meteorological Day for 2024: “At the frontline of climate action”. It featured various games and exhibitions, introducing the impacts of climate change and the development and the work of the Observatory. Visitors participated in the Open day and learned about energy saving and emissions reduction, while gaining a deeper understanding of the Observatory’s services.

Dr Chan Pak-wai, Director of the Observatory, and the Observatory’s mascot, “Dr Tin”, also took this opportunity to share the joy with visitors. Ms Diane Wong Shuk-han, Under Secretary for Environment and Ecology, and members of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council also attended the event and interacted with visitors.

The Observatory invited various community groups, including participants of the “Strive and Rise Programme” and uniformed youth groups, to join the Open Day. Talks on careers with the Observatory and the impacts of climate change were specially organised for participants of the “Strive and Rise Programme”, with an aim of enhancing their awareness of climate change and providing them with a better understanding of the Observatory’s work.

Besides Observatory colleagues, around 60 volunteers from “Friends of the Observatory” acted as goodwill ambassadors to greet the visitors, contributing to the smooth operation of the two-day event.

The Observatory has also launched an “open day” website. Members of the public can simply browse the “Observatory Online Open Day 2024” homepage to enjoy virtual tours of the Observatory’s headquarters from the comfort of home, and learn about the Observatory’s work and services.
