“Severe Rainstorm” and “Exceptionally Severe Rainstorm” – extreme rainfall events in Hong Kong
As global warming continues, the occurrence of extreme weather will become more frequent worldwide. Starting from the rainy season of 2024, the Hong Kong Observatory has strengthened the dissemination of information about rainstorms, and introduced two new terms – “Severe Rainstorm” and “Exceptionally Severe Rainstorm”. “Fuxi” AI model forecasts added to the “Earth Weather” webpage
Leveraging the recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Observatory enhanced the contents of the “Earth Weather” webpage in May 2024 by adding another AI weather prediction model – “Fuxi” – to the website. (More……)
MyObservatory Updated
The Observatory recently updated the “MyObservatory” app, to enhance dissemination of information. When the Observatory issues a “Special Weather Tip” about the possible issuance of Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 9, the tip will be delivered through a push notification from “MyObservatory”. Observatory expands scope of ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 certification
The Observatory’s Information Technology (IT) service management system successfully completed the surveillance audit for expanding the scope of the International Organisation for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) 20000-1:2018, which was conducted by the certification body in March 2024, affirming the Observatory’s dedication to high-quality IT service management.
