Long-range Weather Radars
The Hong Kong Observatory installed a Doppler weather radar at Tai Mo Shan (TMS), the highest mountain in Hong Kong. The TMS weather radar, backed up by another Doppler weather radar at Tate's Cairn (TC), forms a reliable source of radar data for short-range weather forecasting. The TMS and TC weather radars detect the location and intensity of rain areas as well as wind direction and wind speed within a few hundred kilometres of Hong Kong. These information are very useful in detecting and tracking severe weather systems such as rainstorms and tropical cyclones. |
