Annual mean, mean maximum, and mean minimum temperatures in Hong Kong from 1991 to 2020, and the past three sets of normals
In February 2021, the Observatory compiled a new set of 30-year climatological normals for Hong Kong, to replace the previous normals in accordance with guidelines of the World Meteorological Organization, based on meteorological data measured at the Observatory Headquarters and other key meteorological stations from 1991 to 2020. The comparison between this and the previous climatological normals reveals that there are statistically significant increase in the annual mean, mean maximum, and mean minimum temperatures in Hong Kong. This is commensurate with the significant long-term warming trend in Hong Kong due to global warming and local urbanisation. For annual rainfall and relatively humidity, the changes between these two periods are not statistically significant. The Observatory has produced a “Cool Met Stuff” series to introduce this new set of climatological normal [in Cantonese].
