To mark World Meteorological Day on 23 March, the Director of the Observatory, Dr Cheng Cho-ming, gave a recap of the weather in 2021, and elaborated on the weather outlook for Hong Kong in 2022 and the latest developments of the Observatory’s services.
Starting from April, the Observatory would publish seasonal forecasts for the next three months, on a monthly basis. The forecast elements include average temperature and total rainfall for the season in tercile categories. A new version of the “MyObservatory” mobile app was also launched with a more personalised home screen design, enabling users to more conveniently obtain rainfall information and weather in various districts at any time. The Observatory will deliver “Special Weather Tips” messages pertaining to prolonged heat spells through push notifications in “MyObservatory”, starting from this summer. These messages will serve to remind the public to take appropriate measures against impacts of prolonged very hot weather or hot nights.
The Observatory plans to launch an interactive e-book titled “Decoding Radiation” this year. With the aid of infographics and quizzes, this will introduce topics such as the types of radiation, radiation monitoring and nuclear emergency preparedness and response in layman’s terms. The Observatory is also exploring ways to further strengthen forecasting and enhance dissemination of information to the public regarding the combined impact of strong winds and prolonged rainstorms accompanying tropical cyclones, to better safeguard public safety.
