Tai Mo Shan Weather Radar: Over 24 years of Long and Meritorious Service

Chan Ying-wa

In 1999, the Observatory installed a Doppler weather radar at Tai Mo Shan, the highest peak in Hong Kong (see photo). In the past 24 years, the Tai Mo Shan weather radar (TMSWR) has monitored various inclement weather events that affected Hong Kong, including rainstorms and tropical cyclones. In November 2023, the original TMSWR was dismantled, and would be replaced by a new radar with better performance.

We pay tribute to all colleagues of the Observatory who have contributed over the years in maintaining the TMSWR, thus helping ensure its long-standing support for the Observatory’s weather forecasting and warning services.
