New weather radar at Tai Mo Shan comes into operation

    Chan Ying-wa

The Hong Kong Observatory’s new Tai Mo Shan weather radar (TMSWR) was installed in March 2024, and has come into operation to provide essential observation data for monitoring various inclement weather phenomena including thunderstorms, rainstorms and tropical cyclones.

The new TMSWR is the second dual-polarisation S-band Doppler weather radar in Hong Kong, and is capable of monitoring hail and rainfall rates with greater accuracy than its predecessor. The TMSWR is equipped with more advanced hardware and software modules, which enable the generation of higher quality radar products to facilitate weather analysis. The TMSWR operates in tandem with the Tate's Cairn Weather Radar to monitor severe weather round-the-clock. The public can access the regularly updated radar images via the Observatory’s website and the “MyObservatory” mobile app.
