The Hong Kong Observatory organised a workshop on “Recent Advances in Severe Weather Forecast Techniques using Machine Learning” under the Voluntary Cooperation Programme (VCP) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), held from 4 to 8 December 2023. The workshop was attended by 18 participants from the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in various countries. This was the first WMO training activity specifically on using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in severe weather forecasting.

In addition to the presentations, experts from NVIDIA, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), and the Observatory shared their experience with the participants. Hands-on practical sessions on applying ML techniques in weather forecasting were also conducted.
